Financial Aid

The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering offers financial aid to qualified graduate degree applicants in the form of Fellowships, Teaching Assistantships and Research Assistantships. The levels of financial aid are set so that they cover tuition (in the form of a tuition waiver), fees and living expenses.

All forms of financial aid are competitive and are awarded to the best qualified candidates. Typically, all admitted PhD students receive financial aid from the Department in some form.

Financial Aid for PhD applicants:

The ECE Department’s policy is to favor PhD applicants when awarding financial aid. Most applicants who are admitted into the PhD program are guaranteed financial aid as long as they remain full-time students in good standing. Qualified BS degree holders whose aim is to enter the graduate program with financial aid are encouraged to apply directly to the PhD program. Typically, in their statements of purpose, successful applicants for financial aid would clearly state 1) their area of research interest, 2) their research goals and 3) faculty members whom they would like to work with and why.

Financial aid for MS applicants:

Qualified MS degree applicants will be considered for financial aid depending on availability of funding. Qualified BS degree holders whose aim is to enter the graduate program with financial aid are encouraged to apply directly to the PhD program.

Financial aid for minority students:

A small number of Fellowships and Assistantships are available to qualified minority students. Applicants are encouraged to contact Native Hawaiian Science and Engineering Mentorship Program for information and details. Applications from current and potential students are accepted via the UH System Common Scholarship Application.
