Systems & Data Science

A system consists of multiple interacting components working in synergy, and performs a useful function that cannot be achieved by any one component alone. Systems is an interdisciplinary discipline in EE that builds, analyzes, and manages a system. Data science is a broad discipline that uses scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract, manipulate, and analyze information from big data, structured data, unstructured data, mixed data, etc. The Systems and Data Science (SDS) group studies the fundamental problems that arise throughout the SDS pipeline, which leads from the original measurements to decisions, by blending (1) data/signal collection, processing, modeling, and storing, (2) probability and statistics, (3) machine learning and artificial intelligence, and (4) optimization algorithms. The SDS group is working in areas that study particular data modalities and systems, such as big data, wireless communication, computer vision, graphs, multi-agent systems, image processing, imaging/sensing, streaming data, and unsupervised learning. Our SDS applications include 3D cameras, biomedical image computing, data anomaly detection, medical image scanners, network science, power systems, and self-driving cars. SDS research at UHM EE is developing new models, methods and technologies that will continue to impact autonomous systems, city science, communications, diagnostic and therapeutic medicine, social networks, and other areas.
