Signals and Systems

Instructors:

Anders Høst-Madsen, POST 205C

E-mail: See contact

Anthony Kuh, POST 205E

E-mail: kuh@hawaii.edu

Classes:

MWF 12:30-1:20.

Office hours:

Anders Høst-Madsen: generally in the office MWF mornings.

Homework:

There is one homework set per week.

Policy: copying of solutions from the internet, solution manuals, other students’ HW etc. is not acceptable, and constitutes academic fraud. Any homework set that has any sign of copying will count 0%.

Problem session:

Thursdays 9-10am, H247.

Textbook:

Oppenheim & Wilsky: Signals and Systems, 2nd Edition, Prentice Hall, 1997.

Additional/Alternative reading:

E.A. Lee & P. Varaiya: Structure and Interpretation of Signals and Systems, Addison-Wesley, 2003 (very different approach)

Z. Gajic: Linear Dynamic Systems and Signals, Prentice Hall, 2003 (more rigorous mathematical approach).

M.J. Robert: Signals and Systems, McGraw Hill, 2004 (similar to the textbook; some students find this is easier to read).

Course contents:

Signals and systems, linear time-invariant systems, Fourier series, Fourier transform, frequency analysis, sampling, communications systems.

Grading (subject to change):

Homework:10%

Homework quizzes:10%

Midterm 1:20%

Midterm 2:25%

Final:35%

Homework Quizzes:

There will be approximately 7 quizzes; all will be pre-announced. They will consist of a few selected questions from the homework slightly modified. The grade will be the average of the N-2 best scores, when N is the number of quizzes (i.e., if there are 7 quizzes, the 5 best will count).

KOKUA program:

If you feel you need reasonable accommodations because of the impact of a disability, please contact the KOKUA program (V/T) at 956-7511 or 956-7612 in room 013 of the QLCSS.
