Graduate Assistantships

Appointment to teaching or research assistantships is for one year. The appointment may be extended to two years for the teaching assistantships. Appointments to research assistantships will be contingent upon faculty support through research grants and contracts; however, renewal will not usually result in a total period of more than four years especially in State of Hawaii funded positions. To hold an assistantship, the student must demonstrate good performance in his assignments, and must be a full-time student who maintains a grade point ratio prescribed for continued registration in good standing. Should a student fail to meet the requirements, his assistantship will be terminated for the next academic year by the chairman of the Graduate Studies or director of the research project.

All applicants for financial aid must be admitted as potential degree candidates to qualify for appointments. In addition, applicants for teaching assistantships must have a high level of English proficiency

Each application must be accompanied by three letters of recommendation from professors of the applicant's major courses, or from employers under whom the applicant has worked. Graduate Record Examination scores may be beneficial to M.S. applicants; they are required for Ph.D. applicants.
