Gabor Model

The Gabor function model of cortical receptive fields was first proposed by Marcelja in 1980 [Marcelja 1980] however the functions themselves are often credited to Gabor [Gabor 1946] who supported their use in communications.

These are plots of the real and imaginary parts (left and right respectively) of a 2D function made up of a Gabor function along the x-axis and a Gaussian along the y-axis. As was the case with the receptive fields, these functions have some nominal activity (grey) which inceases (white) and decreases (black) in local, oriented bands.
